Adopt
a Greyhound program is in association with Greyhound Pets of America (GPA). GPA is a
national non-profit organization dedicated to finding loving homes for greyhounds who fail
to qualify, or no longer qualify at various racetracks throughout the country. GPA also
informs people that these ex-racers make excellent pets and that they are available for
adoption to qualified homes.
Caring for a Greyhound
Greyhounds are friendly, affectionate dogs who thrive on
attention and human companionship. Raised with their littermates, where they competed for
affection, they love becoming the center of attention and make marvelous pets.
Greyhounds placed through the program are usually between two
and five years old. These ex-racers are very intelligent, adaptable dogs who fit easily
into their new home environment. Greyhounds are quiet, clean, gentle, good-natured dogs
that adapt and get along with other animals and children.
With proper care, greyhounds have a life expectancy of 12 or
more years. They do not require large amounts of exercise. A nice long walk 3 or 4 times a
week, plus a sprint once or twice a week on a grassy open space is good.
Housebreaking is easy. Greyhounds are
kennel-broken. They have been trained to go outside and to keep their kennels clean. Walk
them frequently at first, and they quickly learn that their new home is the place they
keep clean and that outside is where they go to relieve themselves. It is not unusual for
an adopted greyhound to be completely housebroken right from the start.
